From the park gateway to Tidal River Camp Grounds is roughly a 20 minute drive with an 80 km/h pace limit. The native Aborigines referred to as Wilsons Promontory ‘Wamoon’ or ‘Wamoom’. It was subsequently named by the explorer George Bass who sighted the promontory on January 2, 1798.

This affiliation is the most widespread of the swamp communities. In the more saline situations, the understorey is predominantly of saltmarsh species (e.g. Samolus repens, Sarcocornia quinqueflora and Selliera radicans).
